You may also like to start with the Marvel Ultimate series, including titles such as 'Ultimate Spider-Man', 'Ultimate X-Men', and 'The Ultimates'. This series takes the original characters and stories and reboots them. It is perfect for readers new to Marvel, and is widely available.
DC comics have also recently announced the launch of their Reboot series, which retools the entirety of their comics range and provides another perfect opportunity for people new to comics to jump on board.
