Eddie Brock was a failed reporter who became known as Venom when an alien symbiote bonded itself to his body. Brock, who blamed Spider-Man for his failure, and the alien symbiote shared a hatred for the masked hero, having previous been bonded temporarily with him, became one of Spider-Man's most persistent enemies, and has tormented him ever since.
Venom is one of my favourite super-villains as he is not just a generic character, but has an interesting backstory, and he does have some good left in him that occasionally fights it's way to the surface. The alien symbiote has swapped hosts many times during it's history, but I think the Eddie Brock incarnation is the most interesting, as Brock is not necessarily evil, so the two personalities are always fighting to reach the surface.
